Adding LED lighting to your acoustic wall panels is one of the easiest ways to turn a feature wall into a showpiece. But the part most Kiwis get wrong isn’t the lights — it’s the power supply behind them. Choose the wrong LED driver and you’ll end up with flickering strips, overheating, or gear that isn’t legal to use in New Zealand. Here’s how to get it right.
1. Start with total wattage — then add 20% headroom
Every LED strip has a power rating in watts per metre. Multiply that by the total length you’re installing, then add roughly 20% headroom so the driver never runs at full load. For example, 8 metres of 10W/m strip = 80W, so you’d want at least a 100W driver. Running a driver at its limit shortens its life and can cause dimming or flicker.
As a rough guide for our acoustic panel LED lighting sets: a single feature wall or bedhead wall is usually well within 100W, while a large lounge wall, retail display, or church/hall installation with multiple long runs will often need 240W or more.
2. Plug-in or hardwired?
Plug-in drivers are the DIY-friendly option. Our DIY Plug-In 24V 100W LED Driver plugs straight into a standard NZ wall socket (GPO), has a 3-way splitter to run up to three LED sets, and needs no electrician at all. It’s SAA/RCM approved, so it’s fully compliant for New Zealand and Australia.
Hardwired drivers suit larger or permanent installations where the driver is wired into the mains by a licensed electrician and hidden in a ceiling cavity, cabinet, or wall recess. This is where genuine Mean Well units shine. The Mean Well HLG-240H-24A (240W, 24V) handles most large residential feature walls and commercial fit-outs, with IP65 protection and adjustable output. 3. Match the voltage — always
Our LED lighting sets for acoustic panels run on 24V DC. Your driver’s output voltage must match the strip voltage exactly — a 12V strip on a 24V driver will burn out, and a 24V strip on a 12V driver simply won’t light properly. Everything in our range is 24V, so any of the three drivers above will pair correctly with our LED sets.
4. Check the IP rating for the location
IP ratings tell you how well the driver is sealed against dust and moisture. For inside a dry wall cavity or cabinet, almost anything works. For garages, bathrooms, covered outdoor areas, or anywhere damp, look for IP65 or IP67. Both Mean Well HLG drivers are IP65/IP67 rated, so they’re safe in damp and wet locations.
5. Dimming
If you want to dim your panel lighting, the driver has to support it. The HLG-320H-24A offers 3-in-1 dimming (0-10V, PWM, and resistance), which works with common commercial dimming controllers. For simple on/off feature lighting, any of our drivers will do.
6. Make sure it’s legal in New Zealand
This is the step too many imported products skip. LED drivers sold and installed in NZ should meet the AS/NZS 61347 safety standards, and plug-in supplies must carry RCM (Regulatory Compliance Mark) approval. Uncertified power supplies can void insurance and create real fire risk.
