Acoustic wall panels are one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to a room — and the good news is that installing them yourself is easier than you might think. What You’ll Need
- MDF acoustic wall panels (with felt backing)
- Tape measure and pencil
- Spirit level
- Panel adhesive or mounting clips
- Drill and wall plugs (for solid walls)
- Saw or utility knife (if trimming panels)
Step 1: Plan Your Layout
Before you touch a panel, sketch out your wall layout. MDF acoustic panels work best when they cover at least 20–30% of the wall surface. For maximum sound absorption, focus on the walls facing your main sound source — behind speakers, opposite windows, or on parallel walls that cause flutter echo.
Our 600x600mm square panels and 2400x600mm full-height panels can be mixed and matched. Lay them out on the floor first to visualise the pattern before committing to the wall.
Step 2: Prepare Your Walls
Make sure your walls are clean, dry, and free of dust or grease. For plasterboard (gib) walls — the most common in NZ homes — panel adhesive alone is usually sufficient. For concrete or brick walls, you may need to use mounting clips or a timber batten system first.
Step 3: Snap-Fit Installation
Kynora Decor’s MDF acoustic panels use an easy snap-fit system. Apply adhesive to the back of the panel in a zigzag pattern, press firmly against the wall, and hold for 30–60 seconds. Use a spirit level to keep rows straight. The panels click together at the edges for a seamless finish.
Step 4: Add LED Accent Lighting (Optional)
For a premium finish, run LED strip lights along the top or bottom edges of your panel installation. Our LED sets are designed specifically for acoustic panels and are SAA/RCM approved for NZ use.
Tips for Best Results
- Leave panels at room temperature for 24 hours before installing — MDF can warp if moved from cold to warm environments suddenly.
- In high-humidity areas like bathrooms or kitchens, use WPC panels instead — they’re fully waterproof.
- For studios and home theatres, aim for panel coverage on 3–4 walls for the best echo control.
